James Lane Allen Elementary School Addition and Renovation
The work includes the renovation of the existing school with new additions for a total of 72,592 SF. The existing single story school has approximately 58,546 SF and the net additions equal 14,046 SF. James Lane Allen Elementary School was built in 1957 with major building additions in 1968 (classrooms), 1986 (media center & classrooms), 1994 (new boiler room), 1995 (roof replacement), and an undated cafeteria expansion. The scope of work for this current major construction project includes, but is not limited to: Building demolition of existing kitchen, cafeteria, and administration offices within a floor area of approximately 11,172 SF. Selective demolition in the remaining 47,374 SF of existing structure includes removal and replacement of non-load bearing classroom window walls, removal and replacement of mechanical systems (including installation of new variable refrigerant volume systems), removal and replacement of existing electrical systems, fire protection, fire alarm systems, interior finishes (walls, ceilings, floor and base), door hardware, site improvements and paving. New construction of approximately 25,218 SF consists of kitchen and equipment, cafeteria, administration office area, the addition of 8 classrooms, and several secondary entry vestibules. The work will be executed in three principal phases beginning June 2012 and ending December 2013. The building will be occupied during all phases of construction work.

Berea College Deep Green Student Residence
The Berea College Deep Green Residence is a newly constructed 3 story with a partial basement dormitory comprising of approximately 40,250 SF. The project is located just east of Boone Tavern parking lot of Prospect Street currently serving the Anna Smith Residence Hall. Parking will be below the Seabury Center. The project is seeking platinum certification under the 2009 NC version of LEED. The dormitory will provide residence for 120 students and must be completed with building flush out by 6/1/2013. A combination of concrete foundation walls bearing on rock and grade beams will support the load bearing metal studs and structural steel for the slab on metal deck. The roof will be metal seam supported by cold form metal truss and joists. The exterior veneer will be brick. Ceiling finishes will consist of exposed metal deck, acoustical and bead board. Partitions except for a few at the basement will be metal stud and gyp. Most walls will receive wood base, chair rail, and casing. Most floors with be polished concrete except at public areas and restrooms where porcelain and ceramic tiles will be used. A great deal of attention will be required for material selections to verify that LEED credits are being met.

The building is slab-on-grade with wood framed walls, vinyl clad double hung wood windows, R-19 batt insulation, shop-fabricated wood trusses, asphalt shingle roofing, and fiber cement siding. Typical floor finish to be vinyl composition tile, typical wall finish to be painted gypsum board, typical ceiling to be suspended acoustical tiles. Typical ceiling height to be 8’-0″, typical bearing wall to be 10’-1″. The HVAC system is an electric heat pump. The building will accommodate an occupancy of 21 and house the following rooms and functions: a large workroom with kitchenette, four private offices, a small conference room, men’s and women’s restrooms, mechanical room, custodial room, communications room, and reception room. The Work also includes a small concrete parking area (1 space, accessible).
