22AML010 (Vernon Mullins) site is located at 205 Buffalo Road, Pine Top in Knott County,
KY, 41843. GPS coordinates at the site are 37° 16’ 46.895″N, 82° 51’ 12.87″W. On or about August 1, 2022, a heavy storm event damaged work previously performed by the Division of Abandoned Mine Lands, specifically overwhelming the existing drainage structures causing erosion and sedimentation of areas in near proximity to the site. Damage included sedimentation upstream, downstream and within the 60” HDPE pipe and drainage channel and erosion exposing/destabilizing the pipe and headwalls as well as damaging the pipe/headwall interface on the upstream side. Outlet sections of installed HDPE pipes were dislocated from their original place and washed downstream. Aggregate within the stream channel was dislocated and
road culvert pipes were damaged. Pavement on Buffalo Road was damaged and destabilized. To address this concern, the stream channel above and below the 60” HDPE pipe will be reshaped to promote drainage and large aggregate in the channel will be placed to armor side
slopes. Sediment in the Mullins yard and adjacent maintained areas will be removed and/or graded to the approximate original configuration. The eroded area near the outlet of the 60” HDPE pipe will be filled with suitable onsite material and No. 2 Stone aggregate, and pipes previously running through this area as part of the AML project will be replaced or repaired. An allowance for removal/ replacement and repair of existing utilities within the work area has been
included. Materials deemed unfit for use at the project site will be transported to an approved waste area for disposal.
This project will not address underground mine openings. No trees will be disturbed as part of this repair project. All areas disturbed by this project will be revegetated by means of standard AML revegetation practices. Sediment control will be provided by installation of silt checks or silt traps downstream/downslope of the work area and silt fence..
