A. Existing Building: Madison Hall is a 7, 500 SF existing building in the lower town neighborhood of Downtown Paducah, Kentucky. The existing building was built in early 1900s and has been used as a catering and banquet facilities for the last several years. The existing lot also has 37 paved parking spaces which will be partially maintained for this renovation. Three to four of the existing mini-storage building units will be demolished to provide space for new mechanical equipment and trash dumpsters. The Paducah School of the Arts will be the new space user for this building with renovated facilities on both the interior and exterior of the facility.
B. Interior: A comprehensive building program was developed to determine the best use of adapting the existing facility. Ultimately, the building will be the home for the ceramics and jewelry academic programs. A series of large, open studio spaces are provided for each academic discipline along with the required support spaces, storage areas and faculty offices. Many of the existing facilities will remain such as the building footprint (no addition is being made) and the public restroom facilities. The interior finishes will be industrial with exposed brick in some places, exposed plywood for other wall surfaces and unpainted and sealed concrete floors throughout the building. A number of large glass windows will be installed in the building to allow natural light to flood into the interior spaces and provide a visual connection for both people on the outside and inside of the facility.
C. Exterior: The main entry of the building will be relocated to an existing garage opening to provide more generous access into the building and provide a welcoming entry canopy, glass vestibule and landscape areas at the entryway. The existing parking lot will be maintained with the existing curb cuts and paving. A modest area of the parking lot, closest to the new building entry, will be removed to allow the new entry and landscape area to be created. The existing roof will be maintained as much as possible with limited alterations taking place at locations required for new ventilation. The exterior brick walls will be repainted.
