RFB-80-17 Bob Carter Drainage II

RFB-80-17 Bob Carter Drainage II

Estimate:
$119,000.00
Estimated Length of Project:
(Substantial Completion) + 60 Calendar Days (Final Completion)

The proposed project encompasses approximately 0.7 acre of disturbance, and includes the location, sealing, and installation of proper drainage structure to a draining collapsed mine entry, construction of an acid mine drainage treatment cell for the treatment of the drainage from the underground mine works, associated connecting and discharge pipes, and the replacement of a failing subdrain installed under a previous project at this site.
Exploration for the collapsed mine entry or draining adit (primarily by following the drainage to its source) will take place within a specified area. Once located, the entry/adit will be reopened, have a drainage pipe installed, and then be resealed. A line item for polyeurethane foam is included in order to facilitate sealing of the mine opening.
An approximately 10’x10’x10’ (with actual final dimensions being dictated by site conditions) treatment cell will be constructed to accept and treat acidic mine drainage from the underground mine works. This cell will consist of a sealed impervious synthetic liner filled with high CaCO3 limestone (the treatment medium), and having distribution and collection headers constructed from PVC pipe installed at the bottom and top of the cell, respectively. The water from the mine will enter at the bottom of the cell, percolate up through the treatment medium, and be discharged through the top of the cell. A “P-Trap” structure installed as close to the cell’s discharge point as possible will prevent oxygen contamination. An access cap installed at the discharge point will allow the cell to be periodically flushed with clean water. A bypass/drainage line will be installed in order to allow flushing and maintenance of the cell.
This bypass will be fitted with a ¼ -turn valve, which will be placed at a position upon the bypass where all portions of the bypass upstream from the valve will have a minimum of 3’ of soil cover, in order to prevent freezing of the stationary water filling the line upstream from the valve. The discharge pipe and the bypass will both discharge to the existing drainage ditch adjacent to the residential driveway.
A subdrain installed under a previous AMD Abatement Project, which is failing due to accumulation of iron oxide flocculants within the interstitial spaces of the aggregate backfill and “armoring” of the backfill material itself with iron oxides, will be replaced with a subdrain modified to be less likely to clog under AMD conditions. The standard subdrain pipe will be replaced with a larger PVC tube, and all bedding and aggregate within the subdrain structure will be composed of non-calcareous material in order to prevent reaction with any acid mine drainage that is collected by the structure. The subdrain will protect the Carter residence from excessively wet conditions caused by underground mine drainage.
All excess earthen material excavated from the site will be placed in an on-site fill area.
Any project-related damage caused to the residential driveway, property access, or to Alvey Bridge Road will be repaired in-kind. Those portions of the area disturbed by the project that are within the Carter residential yard will be revegetated using the AML Standard Residential Seed Mixture. All areas outside of the residential lawn will be revegetated using the AML Standard Reclamation Seed Mixture.

RFB-70-17 Burt Melton Slide AMD

Estimate:
$270,700.00
Estimated Length of Project:
(Substantial Completion) + 180 Calendar Days (Final Completion)

The Melton residence is located on the right along Hurricane Creek in Kimper Kentucky, approximately 0.25 miles from the Junction of Hurricane and Route 194. Immediately, across Hurricane Creek road from the residence, is a slide. The drain impacted by this slide has water issuing from the abandoned underground mines upslope of Hurricane Creek.
The intent of this project is twofold. First, reclamation will focus on creating an access to the top of the slide, installing a significant rock check/water treatment area, removing the slide material, establishing proper channel flow down the drain to Hurricane. Second, efforts will revolve around establishing a drill bench, drilling holes into the mine, draining the mine, treating the water, and casing the drill holes. Extreme caution must be taken during the drilling and release of water from this site. Water must be tested regularly and proper measures taken to offset any negative environmental impacts. Proper sediment check construction and upkeep will be paramount during the ongoing release of water from the mine site.
Primary project items will include, a significant rock check established in the effected drain, slide removal earthwork, directional drilling, steel casing, water treatment measures, hoe ram, and revegetation.
