The proposed Michael Morrow Drainage & Shaft AMD Abatement Project, approximately 11.5
acres total, consists of excavate iron precipitates from a mine portal, cleaning out a roadside ditch, installation of a culvert, and backfilling a vertical shaft near Dekoven in Union County.
Remove precipitates that have collected in the roadside ditch and around the mine portal and bury them onsite. The ground around the portal is very saturated so use caution. Excavate a
sump near the portal to allow the metal precipitates to collect. Cleanout the roadside ditch and restore it to a trapezoidal shape with small rock checks. Install a culvert under the road and
armor the inlet with Class II/III rock and construct a check in the ditch below the culvert to ensure water turns into the culvert. Access the shaft along existing trails improving them as needed. Break the concrete collar and push into the shaft, backfill the shaft with Class II/III rock. The shaft is estimated to be 16’ diameter x 20’ depth, however the depth may vary when cleared and backfilled. Install a shaft monument over the finished shaft closure. Regrade all disturbed areas and use the AML general seed mixture. Use limestone sand for water treatment if any water is released, especially from excavation around the portal and shaft. Use of a pump(s) is incidental to site preparation. Construction disturbances will be kept to a minimum with a stringently formulated sediment and erosion control program. Prior to beginning any major earth disturbance (excluding initial site preparation for access only), all silt control measures will be installed. All disturbed areas will be promptly revegetated at the end of construction using lime, fertilizer, residential or wildlife seed, and mulch, as necessary. Standard measures will be used for dust control and work hours will occur during AML’s standard time frame of 7 am to 7 pm Monday-Friday with shorter hours
for “critical” work items. Access to the site is via county roads, residential driveways and yards, and an existing access road. This project will include pre- and/or post- project maintenance and repair of existing previously constructed public county roads utilized during the construction of this project, which are administered by the county or local road authority. This construction activity will be conducted under the authority and supervision of the local public road authority and will consist of standard road construction practices appropriate to mitigate impacts to the local community
from potential degraded road conditions in order to maintain public traffic safety.
