RFB-02-22 Earl Sass AMD

Estimate:
$381,397.25
Estimated Length of Project:
(Substantial Completion) + 120 Calendar Days (Final Completion)

The proposed Earl Sass AMD abatement project consists of 17 acres and includes the acidic discharge from the shaft of a pre-law mine. The site is located near Echols in Ohio County, KY at Latitude 37° 19’46” N and longitude 86° 58’18” W. To reach the site from the Beaver Dam exit on the Western Kentucky Parkway, take US 231 North to Beaver Dam, make a left turn onto US62W, continue on 62W for 8.5 miles, turn left onto KY 1245 for 1.56 miles, continue straight onto KY 176 for .16 miles, turn right onto Scottown Road. The site is on the right in approximately 0.6 miles. The site design proposal is to control and treat the iron discharge.
Proposed near the source of the seep is an Anoxic Limestone drain. The limestone drain is 100’ x 60’ x 5’, covered with a minimum of 2’ of soil. The drain will be lined with 20 mil pvc liner and wrapped burrito style. The rock in the drain will be high purity limestone, 2″ to 6″ diameter rock. The anoxic limestone drain will discharge into an aerobic filter wetland. The wetland will be lined with a compacted layer of a mixture of soil and bentonite. A 6″ layer of no. 2 stone will be placed in the wetland, next a 12″ layer of hardwood bark will be placed on top of the stone. Wetland species such as cattails are to be planted in the wetland. The water depth in the wetland will be 6″ to 12″. The wetland will discharge into a constructed class II ditch which will discharge into an existing pond.
A portion of the site is located within an arear classified as flood zone. Waste material generated by the project will be disposed of in areas outside of the flood area.
Silt control measures consist of using the existing pond and following best management practices. A turbity curtain is proposed for the existing pond to prevent short circuiting.
Most of the site is maintained grassland. However, there are a few trees that might potentially be cut during the exploration phase to locate the existing shaft. All disturbed areas will be promptly revegetated at the end of construction.
