WKU-PDC-2019-001 RFQ for Architectural/Engineering Services for WKU Commons
WKU-PDC-2019-001 RFQ for Architectural/Engineering Services for WKU Commons
PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The WKU Commons project includes the renovation and possible expansion of Margie Helm Library and Raymond Cravens Library. Helm Library, an 85,193 square foot facility, was originally constructed in 1931 as a gymnasium. The building was renovated in 1964 and transformed into a library facility which included the internal addition of a second floor level. Cravens Library, a 96,887 square foot facility, was constructed in 1969 as a library facility.
The project is a multi-phased, multi-year renovation, and possible expansion of these facilities which, while maintaining their respective identities, shall collectively become an intellectual and dining destination known as the WKU Commons. The project also includes the demolition of Garrett Conference Center.
The vision of the WKU Commons is to combine learning and engagement with core campus services in a creative and innovative way that benefits the entire campus community. This entails creating a space where students gather to eat, work, study and collaborate as well as a destination for faculty to engage with students and peers.
The concept brings together a partnership between University libraries and dining services which would include spaces where digital and print scholarship and data are used, flexible teaching spaces that enhance and enable active learning, collaboration spaces and dining services. This is intended to create a flexible and modern common space that serves as a dining destination for both campus and community.
The buildings shall remain occupied during any/all construction phases. To that end, MEP and dining services consulting disciplines shall be emphasized.
