Estimate:
$194,000.00
Estimated Length of Project:
(Substantial Completion) + 120 Calendar Days (Final Completion)
Chris Taylor Project: To arrive at this site in Johnson County, in Paintsville from junction of KY3388 & KY40 travel east on KY40 approximately 5.1 miles to Kite Hollow. Turn left and travel 0.5 mile to residence on the left.
Latitude 37° 48’ 12.30”, Longitude 82° 43’ 55.20”.
Mr. Taylor has reported water drainage problems around his home, storage sheds, and swimming pool, combined with an unstable hillside directly above these structures.
Reclamation work at this site will be accomplished by constructing Wildlife Portal Closures at the three mine openings located on the mine bench above Mr. Taylor’s property. A sub drain 170 feet long will be constructed on the mine bench to direct the standing water off the bench into a constructed Concrete Block-Tied Mat Ditch 8 feet wide and 100 feet long leading down the slope and across Mr. Taylor’s yard to Kite Hollow Road. A small wooden shed will be removed and later replaced to allow construction of the 8 foot ditch. The water will then be channeled into a 100 linear feet section of 30” RHDPE culvert placed under the road with a concrete headwall at both ends and finally discharging into the creek on the east side of Kite Hollow Road.
Mr. Taylor is also troubled by surface runoff water that flows from his neighbor’s back yard (daughter’s home) and then onto the northwest corner of the Taylor property. This water will be directed into a newly constructed 2’ Flat Bottom ECB Ditch 170 feet in length placed between a newly constructed Block Wall and Mr. Taylor’s house.
The slowly moving hillside will be stabilized by constructing a 6’ high Non Reinforced Block Wall-Type II 80 feet long along the base of the slope behind Mr. Taylor’s home extending to the swimming pool area. A sub drain behind the block wall will discharge through an 8” solid HDPE pipe to the newly constructed ECB Ditch.
The access road to the mine bench lies about 200 feet to the north of Mr. Taylor’s residence and through a neighbor’s driveway and side yard. It will be necessary to remove some trees greater than 3” diameter in order to access and do the work along the bench.
The waste material from this project will be located on site as shown on the drawings. If additional area is needed material will be transported to another AML site known as the Mitchell Daniels project at 143 Left Fork of Two Mile Road. This project site is just 3.5 miles north of Kite Hollow Road along KY 40, to a right turn onto Left Fork of Two Mile Road and then a few hundred yards to the Daniels residence on the right. The waste area is located in the side yard at the Daniel residence. The total project area is approximately 2.7 acres. No permits are required to complete this project
The Mitchell Daniels property is located in eastern Johnson County, east of Paintsville at 37° 49’ 43.3” N and 82° 43’ 23.0” W. The site can be reached by taking KY-40 from Paintsville for approximately 8 miles to a right turn onto Left Fork of Two Mile Road. The Daniels residence at 143 Left Fork of Two Mile is on the right about 0.2 mile down the road.
A slip exists behind the residence, and water runs from the slide area, soaking the back yard. An open portal, previously closed with concrete block, is located on the hill behind the residence, on property owned by Mr. Merle Preston. The concrete block closure is failing, and an approximately 2 ft. by 2 ft. opening is evident.
Site preparation includes clearing and grubbing of vegetation. A temporary low water crossing across the Left Fork of Two Mile Creek is included for access. A quantity of roadway stone is included for additional access as necessary. Straw bales and silt fence are included to minimize erosion from the site. No trees larger than three inches in diameter, whether dead or alive, will be removed except during the designated time allowed unless they are on an unstable slope.
Reclamation plans consist of re-closing the portal with wildlife access and collecting drainage into a Gabion “V” Ditch 100 feet in length which will take the water to the bottom of the slope. The water will then flow into a 35 L.F. section of 10’ wide Concrete Block-Tied Mat Ditch. A concrete headwall will channel the water into 125 feet of 15” HDPE Pipe and discharge into Two Mile Creek. Water at the toe of the slope above the back yard will be collected into a length of combination rock ditch-drain, with a portion of this flow directed into the 15” HDPE Pipe, and a portion directed into another 15” HDPE Pipe on the east side of the project site. The waste area will be on site on both sides of this 15”Pipe on the east side. Bituminous repair is included as necessary for the county road.
All areas disturbed by construction activities are to be revegetated in accordance with regional, regulatory, and project standards, using agricultural limestone, fertilizer, seed and mulch. A standard seed mix is to be used. The total area of the project site is 1.9 acres. There are no permits to be required for this project.
