2013 Slope Repair Project

2013 Slope Repair Project

Item 1
The landfill slope movements are directly downslope of an area where previous slope repairs were performed in 2009. The slope movements recently observed have resulted in tension cracks in the landfill cap material, a 3 foot high scarp and bulging at the toe of the landfill slope affecting less than 0.5 acres.

The Item 1 slide repairs will consist of the following work tasks:
1. Construction a 10 foot wide and 6 foot high toe berm using crushed limestone rock
2. Excavating the failed slope material behind the rock toe berm, segregating rubbish, debris, and large rock pieces from the excavated soil for disposal.
3. Place the remaining excavated soil as compacted backfill behind (upslope of) the rock toe berm resulting in a flattened landfill slope at the toe.
4. Obtain, place and compact additional select backfill soil (as needed) from designated borrow sites on landfill property to flatten the existing toe of slope.
5. Grade all borrow areas to drain and reestablish vegetation on the slope repair area

Item 2
Access road to the Item 1 work area is provided via a gravel road starting at the Convenience Center and ending about 1,100 feet short of the Item 1 work area. The work task for Item 2 consists of the placement of a six inch thick roadbed of crushed stone to provide wet weather access to the Item 1 work area. Item 2 will be bid an allowance to the contract for construction. The allowance will be added to the approved work scope if in the opinion of the Engineer the gravel roadbed is needed to access the Item 1 work area.

Item 3
The Tire Disposal area is an approximate 0.9 Acre area where tires and other solid wastes were buried. Several tires have recently worked their way to the surface and have been removed by the Landfill Commission. The recent work in this area indicated the soil cap over the solid waste was less than required so additional cover soils will be placed over this area.

The work elements for the Tire Disposal area consist of the following:
1. Strip surface vegetation from the tire disposal area and the borrow source. Stockpile the vegetation in an areas approved in advance by the Engineer.
2. Scarify the stripped surface in the Tire Disposal area.
3. Place grading stakes across the Tire Disposal area on no greater than 25 foot centers, showing the proposed final grade.
4. Place and compact 12 inches of approved cover soil over the entire Tire Storage Area and grade the area for positive drainage.
5. Place 6 inches of approved topsoil over the compacted cover soil.
6. Fertilize, reseed and establish grass vegetation on all areas disturbed by construction activities.
