This project will address problems created by a mine blowout in 2015 and later heavy rainfall in 2018 in Lynch, Harlan County. We will install silt controls in the channel above a flume. Controls will include gabion weirs, silt traps, and armoring eroding stream banks. At the mine blowout, we will install exterior bars over the opening, fully open the mine so that it freely drains and grade the existing ditch, and create a swale in the roadway to improve the existing drainage pathway.
The waste area is property owned by the City of Lynch used under the previous AML small purchase project. Material excavated from the stream areas is disposed of outside the banks near the point of generation. Revegetation near homes receives the AML Residential Seeding protocol; otherwise use the general AML seed mixture. No trees will be cleared. All roads are existing.
